Reviewing a Media Company According To Rams 10 Principles

YouTube has become one of the biggest media platforms in the world. What started as a simple website for people to upload and share videos has turned into a major part of how people consume entertainment, news, education, music, and social media. Millions of people use YouTube every day, while creators use the platform to build audiences, promote themselves, and even create careers. Because YouTube is such a large and constantly changing media platform, I wanted to look at it through the 10 Principles of Good Design created by Dieter Rams. Rams was a German industrial designer who believed that good design should be useful, understandable, honest, and simple. His philosophy can be summed up by the idea of “less, but better.” Although Rams’ principles were originally created for physical products, I think they can also be applied to digital media. A website or media platform is still a designed experience. The way users navigate, find content, interact with features, and understand information all contribute to whether the platform has good design. But before that who is Ram, and why are his 10 principles are important. When people think about good design, they may focus mostly on how something looks. However, good design is also about how something works, how easily people can understand it, and whether it accomplishes its purpose without creating unnecessary confusion. One designer who strongly influenced this way of thinking is Dieter Rams, a German industrial designer who became famous for his work at the electronics company Braun. Rams believed that design should be useful, understandable, honest, and as simple as possible. His ideas were eventually summarized into his famous 10 principles of good design. These principles are important because they provide a way to evaluate whether a product or device is designed for the user rather than simply designed to look attractive. Although Rams originally developed these ideas in relation to physical products, they can also be applied to websites and digital interfaces. For this review, I looked at the Youtube website and evaluated its interface using Rams’ 10 principles.

1. Good Design Is Innovative

YouTube is one of the strongest examples of innovation in modern media. Before platforms like YouTube became popular, video distribution was mostly controlled by television networks, movie studios, and other large media companies. YouTube gave ordinary people the ability to create and distribute their own video content to any audience. The platform has also continued to change over time. Features such as livestreaming, YouTube Shorts, community posts, etc have expanded what the platform can do. What makes YouTube especially innovative is that it did not just create another place to watch videos. It changed the relationship between creators and audiences. Viewers can become creators themselves, and creators can build audiences without needing to work for a traditional media company.

YouTube is extremely useful because it serves many different purposes. Someone can open YouTube to watch entertainment, learn how to fix something, listen to music, follow the news, watch a documentary, learn a new skill, or simply watch videos for fun. The search function is one of the most important parts of YouTube’s usefulness. If someone has a question, there is a good chance that there is a video explaining the answer. YouTube is also useful for creators. The platform provides tools for uploading videos, editing information, looking at analytics, communicating with viewers, and building an audience. However, the huge amount of content can sometimes make finding exactly what you want more difficult.

YouTube’s visual design is relatively simple. Its recognizable logo, clean video thumbnails, search bar, and consistent layout make the platform easy to identify. The video thumbnails are especially important because they are one of the first things users see. However, this is also where YouTube’s design becomes more complicated. Creators compete for attention, so thumbnails can sometimes become extremely busy, colorful, or filled with large text and exaggerated expressions. The platform itself generally has a clean appearance, but the content displayed on it can make the overall experience feel much more visually chaotic.

4. Good Design Makes a Product Understandable

YouTube is relatively easy to understand, even for someone using it for the first time. Most of the important features are clearly labeled and recognizable. The search bar is obvious, videos are displayed using thumbnails and titles, and basic actions such as liking, commenting, sharing, and subscribing are easy to find. The navigation system also helps users move between different parts of the platform. Someone who has never used YouTube before can usually figure out the basic functions within a few minutes. There are certainly more complicated features for creators, but the basic viewer experience remains understandable

5. Good Design Is Unobtrusive

This is one area where YouTube has some problems. Rams believed that good design should allow the product to speak for itself instead of constantly demanding attention. YouTube, however, is designed to keep users engaged. Recommendations, autoplay, Shorts, notifications, advertisements, comments, and suggested videos can all compete for the user’s attention. These features are useful, but they can also make it difficult to simply watch one video and leave. For example, someone might search for a specific tutorial and then find themselves watching recommended videos afterward. From a business perspective, keeping users engaged makes sense. From Rams’ perspective, however, it could be seen as an unnecessary distraction.

6. Good Design Is Honest

YouTube generally makes it clear what users are clicking on, but the platform has some challenges when it comes to honesty. One major issue is advertising. Advertisements are an important part of YouTube’s business model, but they can sometimes interrupt the viewing experience. There is also sponsored content created by individual creators, which can make it difficult for viewers to distinguish between a creator’s personal recommendation and paid promotion. Clickbait is another issue. Some creators use exaggerated thumbnails or titles to convince people to click on their videos. While this is not necessarily caused by YouTube’s interface itself, the platform’s design encourages creators to compete for clicks and views.

YouTube has been around for more than two decades and has remained one of the most important platforms in digital media. The platform has changed significantly over the years, but its basic purpose has remained the same: people upload videos, and other people watch them. This is an important part of good design. YouTube has been able to update its interface and add new features without completely abandoning the basic concept that made it successful. Its longevity also shows that the basic idea behind the platform continues to be relevant.

8. Good Design Is Thorough Down to the Last Detail

YouTube has clearly put a lot of thought into the details of its platform. Things such as video recommendations, playback controls, captions, playlists, watch history, notifications, search filters, and creator analytics all contribute to the experience. Even small features can make a difference. For example, being able to change playback speed or turn captions on can make watching a video more convenient. However, because YouTube has become so large, the platform can sometimes feel inconsistent. Different types of content and creators use the platform in different ways, and some features are not always as easy to find as others.

9. Good Design Is Environmentally Friendly

This principle is more difficult to apply to a digital media company because YouTube does not manufacture a physical product that people purchase. However, digital platforms still have environmental impacts. Videos are stored and streamed through large data centers, which require electricity and other resources. At the same time, digital media can replace some physical forms of media. Instead of producing DVDs, CDs, magazines. People can access enormous amounts of content digitally. YouTube therefore has both environmental costs and potential environmental benefits.

10. Good Design Is as Little Design as Possible

This is probably the most interesting principle when looking at YouTube. At its core, YouTube is simple: find a video, watch it, and move on. However, the modern YouTube experience is much more complicated. Users have subscriptions, recommended videos, Shorts, livestreams, playlists, comments, notifications, advertisements, memberships, and many other features. None of these features are necessarily bad. In fact, many of them are useful. The problem is that they can make the platform feel overwhelming. Rams’ philosophy is not necessarily about having the fewest features possible. It is about removing things that are unnecessary and keeping what actually improves the experience. YouTube could arguably benefit from simplifying certain parts of its platform. Verdict: YouTube succeeds at simplicity in some areas but struggles to maintain Rams’ idea of “less, but better.”

Overall, I think YouTube is a good example of how Rams’ principles can be applied beyond physical products. A digital platform is still a designed experience, and every button, thumbnail, recommendation, and menu affects how users interact with it. YouTube may not perfectly follow Rams’ idea of “less, but better,” but its ability to remain useful and innovative for so many years shows that many of his principles still apply to modern media.
